APPRAISAL OF CHALLENGES RELATING TO PLANNING, PREPARATION AND UTILIZATION OF FACILITIES IN VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) programmes have significant role in the economic development of any nation because it enables the recipients to acquire skills. The relevant occupational skills acquired through Technical and Vocational Education by individuals can bring about job generation and self-employment, which in return, will drastically reduce the rate of poverty and corruption in Nigeria and these skills are acquired in the workshops and classrooms. For effective teaching and learning to take place, there should be adequate facilities to enhance this learning process. This paper intends to critically appraise the challenges relating to planning, preparation and utilization of facilities in Vocational and Technical Education in Nigeria. The paper sees facilities planning being responsible for managing changes to an institutions facility to enable the institutions department to meet its mission and goals. The objectives of facilities planning was critically looked at and the economic challenges relating to planning, preparation and utilization of facilities in TVE programs critically examined and which include among others; population growth, corruption, public service inefficiency, vandalization and some authors identified some factors that are responsible for the poor learning outcomes of students as it relate to planning, preparation and utilization of facilities in Vocational and Technical Education programme to include inappropriate planning of educational programme, insufficient material resources, inadequate funding and suggestions such as, that committee should be set up by the government and every other stakeholders to ensure regular monitoring of facilities, equipment delivered and installed by those who charged with that responsibilities.
