USE OF INTERNET RESOURCES, SOCIAL MEDIA UTILIZATION AS CORRELATE OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMET OF OFFICE TEECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT STUDENTS IN POLYTECHNICS IN OGUN STATE
Abstract
This study investigated the use of internet resources, social media utilization as correlate of academic achievement of office technology and management (OTM) students in polytechnics in Ogun state using descriptive survey research design of correlation type. A total number of 1300 HND 2 office technology and management students selected through simple random sampling technique from all the state owned polytechnics in Ogun state participated in the study. Three research questions were raised and answered in the study. Three validated instruments namely: students cumulative grade point (CGPA)information format (SCIF), use of internet resources scale (UIRS), social media utilization questionnaire (SMUQ)were used for data collection. Data from the study were analyzed using the multiple regression analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson product moment correlation. Findings from the study revealed, that use of internet resources and social media utilization when combined jointly and significantly predict the academic achievement of OTM students in polytechnic in Ogun state. There also exist a positive and significant relationship between use of internet resources, social media utilization and academic achievement of OTM students in polytechnics in Ogun state. It is recommended among others that government and stakeholders in education should encourage and support the use of internet and social media for educational purposes, while internet and social media utilization skills should be infused in the curriculum of OTM programmes in polytechnics in Nigeria.
